Just to say thanks to everyone who came along to our Open Day on Back Pain - today - both therapists and clients! We had a lovely time and we hope you did too. Sara was rushed off her feet with people asking about chiropractic and getting free spinal checks, whilst Jess, Tony  & Gareth were kept busy talking about acupuncture, podiatry and osteopathy. Whilst people were waiting many people were taking advantage of Denise's free reflexology tasters (see picture}, whilst all Tracey and I could do was make everyone cups of herbal tea.

Again Big Thanks - Look out for more Open Days later in the year

Back Pain Relief - the natural way 03/06/2011

                            Picture
Ramsbottom Natural Health Clinic, Vitality Plus, is hosting a Back and Joint Pain Open Day on Saturday 26th March. On offer will be advice from a range of therapists, free spinal checks, free foot health checks and reflexology taster sessions along with a range of discounted back care/pain products.

A massive  80% of us will suffer from back pain, and 1 in 5 of us will visit our GP with it each year. So it's a common problem. The most common symptom is pain in the lower back, but people may also have muscle spasms, reduced mobility and pain down either or both legs. Poor posture and foot problems can also contribute to back, hip and knee pain.   Most back pain is not serious and keeping active or applying hot or cold compresses helps reduce recovery time and pain. However you should seek advice from your GP or a Medical Professional if your pain is associated with fever, swellings or lumps in the back, pain spreading to the higher back or chest or any loss of bowel or bladder control.

Remember though, most back pain is not serious, and although it can be debilitating at the time, the long-term outlook is good. There are many natural treatments available to help that recovery and many of these are available through the clinic and shop at Vitality +. The Open Day is an opportunity to experience one or more of these treatments without obligation and without charge. On 26th March vistors to Vitality + will be able to gain free advice from  our therapists including the Osteopath, Chiropractor, Acupuncturist, Podiatrist, and Reflexologist  who all treat back and joint pain regularly. All our therapists are fully qualified and registered with their professional bodies.

The atmosphere in the clinic is relaxed and friendly with free Herbal Tea for all. Why not come along and join us. We'd love to see you!

Look After Your Feet this Winter 11/04/2010

This is an opportunity to remind you of the good foot care habits that will help maintain your feet in good condition this Autumn and Winter. During summer lots of people have worn footwear with no heel cup for example: sandals, mules and flip flops. This type of footwear can lead to cracked heels, manage this by reducing callus with a pumice stone after a bath or shower, next apply Heel Balm cream which will moisturise the heel. After three or four weeks heels will be back to normal. If the cracked heel is painful please telephone for further free advice and or an appointment.

Fungal nail infection can be particularly troublesome please ask for a free advice leaflet. Maintaining good foot hygiene is the key to success, by reducing the moisture in footwear, changing socks regularly, avoid walking barefoot in communal bathing areas, these habits promote good foot health foot. There are many brands of cream to treat fungal nail infections in local pharmacies.

On a medical note Scientists at East Anglia University are carrying out in depth research to confirm that a compound called sulforaphane blocks the enzyme activity which leads to joint breakdown and osteoarthritis. This compound is found in broccoli and when eaten creates high levels of sulforaphane  in the blood stream and this next stage of the project will seek to find out how effective it is at entering joints to slow or reduce osteoarthritis.

Looking ahead to winter, if you are prone to chilblains avoid going outside when it is very cold, with slipper’s as your footwear. The sudden change in temperature from a warm home to frost outside can be very painful. Think about wearing shoes with a thicker sole and appropriate socks or stockings.

Herbal Walk with the FHT 08/14/2010

Today I had the pleasure of taking a group of members from the Wigan and Leigh branch of the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) on a herbal walk along the banks of the River Irwell. We were really lucky with the weather - despite the ominous clouds early on - and managed to find lots of plants to see along the way - too many really and we ended up slightly late for our lunch at Irwell Vale Methodist church, who had opened especially for us. It was nice to have such an interested and knowlegeable group, and I learnt a lot from them and hopefully they learnt something from me - so thanks to the lady who told me about the use of silver birch in Latvia, the person who found the St John's Wort that I missed - a big thank you to Jack for organising it and a big thank you too to Jenni at the Methodist Church for the fantastic hospitality at lunch time. You can find out more about the FHT at http://www.fht.org.uk/Homepage/ - If any other groups are interested in doing something similar, please contact us at Vitality - we'll happily cater for your group.

                            Lip Balm Recipe 06/16/2010

At Ladies Week at Park Farm this week we are delivering a series of demonstrations on how to make your own balms and creams. Yesterday, I made a rose, honey and orange lip blam using natural ingredients. And especially for the lady who asked me for the recipe here it is....

Stage 1: Making a sun infused oil

                            • Place a handful of rose petals (from about two roses) in a screw-top jar or kilner jar (be sure to use scented, organic roses or roses from your own garden that you know haven't been sprayed)
                            • Cover the petals with just enough almond oil to cover them all, pressing the petals down into the oil. If you don't have almond oil, any nut or vegetable oil will do
                            • Place the jar on a sunny windowsill for 5 - 10 days, then strain of the mixture through clean muslin, squeezing the petals to get all the oil  from the mix.
                            • You've now made a sun-infused oil of Rose - well done! Retain the oil for stage two.

Stage 2: Making the lip balm

                            • Pour 50ml of your sun-infused oil into a pan
                            • Add 1-2 tsp of beeswax
                            • GENTLY warm the oil until the beeswax dissolves
                            • Add 1/2 tsp of Vit E oil (optional)
                            • Add 1/2 tsp Honey
                            • Add 5-10 drops of orange
                            • Whisk vigorously  to disperse the honey and quickly pour into small, sterilised screw top jars
                            • Once cool, and solid, screw lids on

This lip balm is perfect for soothing damaged or dry lips as it is soothing, anti-inflammatory and mildly antiseptic. It will keep perfectly well for 6 months.

You can easily adapt this recipe by using any medicinal flower petals, such as Marigold or lavender, for example, or adding your favourite essential oil.

Herbal Walk in Nuttall Park 05/16/2010

In Search of the Nine Sacred Herbs of the Anglo-Saxons

                            A worm came creeping,

                              he tore asunder a man.
                            Then took Woden
                            nine magic twigs
                            and he smote the serpent
that he flew into nine bits...

So begins the story of how the Anglo-Saxon god Woden obtained the nine sacred herbs, which they believed had the power to heal all ills.

This herbal walk will take you through the woods and riverbanks around Nuttall Park to find how many of these sacred plants we can find – they may be more common than you think!

The walk is led by Tim Cappelli from Vitality + in Ramsbottom. Tim is a qualified medical herbalist, with degrees in herbal medicine and environmental biology. He will help identify these and other plants of interest, tell of their history and how you can use them for common ailments today.

The walk is free and open to all and will last about 1  hour. Please bring suitable footwear.

                            Date: Monday 31st May

                            Time: 2.00 p.m.

                            Meet: By the Ranger’s lodge
